A question for the Hornblower fans.

I don't suppose that any wonderful fan out there has created a video that contains only the Edrington scenes from The Frogs and the Lobsters. I have the movie, but I'm doing research for potential Edrington fic, and trying to skip around the whole thing just to get to his scenes is annoying me.

I'd try to make one myself, but lack of technical skills and access to the necessary technology makes the attempt an unpleasant proposition.

Title: Duty Bound
Fandom: Hornblower: Mutiny and Retribution
Pairing: Hobbs/Wellard
Rating/Content: Adult (+18) – bondage, dub-con, graphic rough sex and some violence
Length: 3600 approx.
Summary: Wellard is stubborn, cute, and strong, and Hobbs is determined, devious, and very surprised. I confess there are some plot similarities to Deanna's very sexy Damnation, but this is a somewhat different take on the scenario. Some spoilers for both episodes.
Notes: Written for [personal profile] delphi for winning my offer for the [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti auction. I'm not sure if I've ever really written slightly kinky smut before, so this was an interesting challenge!

Spoilers: Examination For Lieutenant (British title, US The Fireships)
Word count: 4683
Rating: U (Suitable for all)
Pairing/Characters: Hornblower, Bunting, original characters
Author's Note: I wrote and posted this on LJ over the Christmas break. I was watching and capping my DVD of Examination for Lieutenant, and this plotbunny bit me rather hard. It's a particular episode of the story of the DVD, told from the point of view of a Marine Private (my own creation).

The title comes from a reply I made to [personal profile] esteven's comment about another fic of mine being a 'perfect oakum story'. Oakum in this sense meaning 'filler'. I told her the next story that came out at a decent length would be titled 'Smoke and Oakum' with reference to Jack Aubrey's comment that they would "run like smoke'n'oakum'. Which this story has.

I hope you enjoy it.

I used to not get vids. Not the case any more. (Hell, I have made a few.) I am, however, simultaneously an unsophisticated viewer and a very picky one: for me to like a vid, I need a clear narrative that makes sense in my head. So some well-known vids by well-known vidders leave me cold, while other vids that aren't technically perfect still make me squee. (And when narrative sense and technical quality come together, whoo-ee!)

So, here are some vids I like in a variety of fandoms. In several cases these links go to a webpage where you might need to scroll to find the actual vid. I'm starting with the most serious material (what's the equivalent of deathfic for a vid?) and moving crackward.

A Time of Her Own by [livejournal.com profile] gwyn_r | Sharpe, Sharpe/Teresa. Okay, this is my true OTP in this fandom. I adore Teresa, the commander of the Spanish guerillas; she is tough and smart and strong and not beautiful in a conventional sense. This vid spoils her arc, but it’s not exactly a surprise in the movies.

Lullaby by [livejournal.com profile] sdwolfpup | Hornblower, Hornblower/Archie. Hankie warning. Spoilery for the series. Beautiful and sad and, WAAAAAH.

Gentle Soldier of my Soul by [personal profile] damned_colonial | Vanity Fair miniseries. I was just poking around today and found this; I don't know the fandom, but to me this vid is all about the heartache of loving a military man. Slow, deliberate, measured, atmospheric.

Smooth by [personal profile] black_hound | Hornblower, Bush/Kennedy. I like this vid partly because I love the song, and partly because, GUH. Gorgeous men making eyes at each other.

Fight! by [livejournal.com profile] kazokuhouou | Hornblower, completely gen and absolutely hilarious. To the Mortal Kombat theme song, and, hee! It goes on a little long - I would have cut a few repetitions - but the timing with the marching and cannonfire and especially the shouting is very clever.

Barbossa is Your Dentist (YouTube link) by Alanuviel ([livejournal.com profile] darkalice_666) | Pirates of the Caribbean. The pirates lip-synch to the dentist song from "Little Shop of Horrors." Crack of the highest order. I can't even. Not the most technically excellent vid, but. DENTIST.

For my second Open Beta Celebration rec set, I come bringing fanart recs in a variety of fandoms. All are pretty much worksafe except as indicated.

I've got to start with [personal profile] black_hound, because her Hornblower artwork is just magnificent. I particularly like this one of Bush from Flying Colours, these two Bush portraits, and these two Pellew portraits. And this (NSFW) Bush/Hornblower drawing fills my slashy little heart with glee.

I was looking for one particular illustration, that I had once made an icon from, and coincidentally the artist reposted it just the other day. I like this Master and Commander illustration by [personal profile] jwaneeta perhaps because the characters are not taken directly from the movieverse - although the ship is!

More obviously movie-based are these fabulous Sharpe illustrations by Petite Madame. She has a whole series, but my favorites are this Sharpe portrait and Sharpe's Waterloo - I particularly love the composition of and the pose in this second image.

The Theban Band are well-known for highly photographic images, and I like this one of Sharpe in particular.

They also have quite a few Pirates of the Caribbean images, both naughty and nice; I admit that my favorite is this rather sweet Sparrow/Norrington(/rum OT3) but there are quite a few more explicit ones in their collection.

I'm a big fan of crossovers, so naturally I couldn't resist a few crossover art recs:

The Theban Band's Captain Jacks - three of a kind!

[livejournal.com profile] beeej's gorgeous and clever manip of John and Rodney from Stargate Atlantis as Master and Commander

And from the cracktastic side of the force:

The Theban Band's Muppet Sparrow/Norrington

[personal profile] gilly's Aubreyad Smurfs

And that's it for this set! I hope you can find something to make you go awww, oooh, or heee!

And so we begin with week 1's recs! Just a reminder that [personal profile] isis and [personal profile] melannen are also down to do recs this week. Here's the list, and signups are still open if you'd like to join in. If you're wondering what's required in a recs set, I'd define it as at least 3 things you like, with links, and an explanation of why you think they're good. Easy, right?

Anyway, I said I'd do recs for history nerds, so here they are. Six fics and a vid. Master and Commander, Hornblower, POTC, and Temeraire.

Five Things: The World Turned Upside Down
Author: [personal profile] astolat
Fandom: Master and Commander
Pairing: Jack/Stephen (explicit)

This was my gateway fic, the one that got me into fandom, and it largely did so through its historical detail and period writing style. On first glance it's pretty crack-like: a sex change virus sweeps through Europe, affecting one in three adults of reproductive age. For many authors, this would be a straightforward genderfuck fic, but when [personal profile] astolat writes it we're taken through the social implications of it as well: will one in three Members of Parliament, now female, be allowed to keep their positions? Will military officers retain their rank? And what are the implications, for a country at war, if they do not? And if you enjoy this, you might also enjoy Five Things: Invasion, which even comes with extensive historical notes at the end. (The only reason I'm not reccing it separately is because Ithought one rec per author was enough, but I couldn't let it slip by without even a mention.)

Wages of Vice (backup non-geocities link)
Author: jat_sapphire
Fandom: These Old Shades by Georgette Heyer
Pairing: Avon/Davenant (explicit)

If you're interested in slash and the 18th century, you've probably heard of Rictor Norton's Mother Clap's Molly House, and you probably also know that it's pretty hard to come by. Well, never fear! Jat_sapphire's "Wages of Vice" is set in that world, and draws heavily on the background provided in that book about London's gay subculture in the Georgian era. Its failing, if anything, is that it tends a little bit towards "my research, let me show you it", but as long as you don't read it right after Norton, you probably won't be bothered by it. Quite apart from that, it's a lovely, sexy, emotionally fulfilling story about Avon and Davenant, how they met, and how they stayed together.

A Witness to Courage
Author: fubsycate
Fandom: Hornblower
Gen

The 95th regiment shows up rather inexplicably in episode 4 of the Hornblower TV series, "The Frogs and the Lobsters". Inexplicably, because that regiment hadn't yet been formed, and Forester actually specified a different regiment for the expedition to Muzillac. It's interesting, though, because the 95th were probably the most famous English regiment of the Napoleonic Wars. They mostly fought in the Peninsula (Spain and Portugal), as anyone who knows Sharpe will be aware. However, they got off to a slow start there, and before they started their long string of victories, pushing Marshal Soult back over the Pyrenees into France, they got their arses kicked at Corunna. They had been forced to retreat, in inclement weather, and many men died along the way of illness and privation. "A Witness to Courage" is set at the end of this retreat, when Horatio Hornblower, captaining one of the ships sent to pick up the 95th, arrives and finds Edrington on the shore. This story is, quite frankly, heartbreaking.

Here's a visual aid:

American Revolution series
Author: [livejournal.com profile] artaxastra
Fandom: Pirates of the Caribbean
Pairing: Jack/Will/Elizabeth

The American Revolution is not a period about which I'm very well informed, but after reading this fic -- and with a little help from Wikipedia -- I now know a whole lot more. This is a multi-part story, beautifully written, and really compelling. There's a real sense of place and time here, and the historical and atmospheric details seem spot on, at least to my ignorant eye. Best of all, it's a well-written poly fic, showing mature non-monogamous relationships over time and from various points of view, and weaving them around a non-relationship-centred plot.

Between Wind and Water
Author: [livejournal.com profile] rexluscus
Fandom: Pirates of the Caribbean
Pairing: Jack/Norrington (explicit in some chapters)

If there's any war I know less about than the American Revolution, it would have to be the War of Jenkins' Ear. I mean, really, who names these things? Luckily [livejournal.com profile] rexluscus provides ample historical notes and Wikipedia links, and I'm now up to speed: we're talking about a war between Spain and England ca. 1739-1741, largely played out around Central America, the Caribbean, Florida, and thereabouts. This fic is a fun Sparrington romp, very much in character for both of them, but also peppered with historical people and incidents and more detail than you could shake a stick at. I particularly liked the emphasis on Spain's presence in the Caribbean, which was historically very important, but pretty much ignored in the movies. This is a really professional, readable story, and well worth your time.

Warrior's Work
Author: [personal profile] melina
Fandom: Temeraire
Gen

You know how the Battle of the Nile ended, right? Big boom? Well, what could go better with dragons? [personal profile] melina's fic takes one of Nelson's great victories as its starting point, and looks at how it would have been with air support. The story's told from Jane Roland's point of view and, of course, takes place pre-canon, before Temeraire was ever hatched.

Fandom: Hornblower, ish.
Gen (warning for disturbing content)

And finally, a vid. Created as a companion piece to [personal profile] commodorified's For the Sake of a Wavering Light (Archie/Edrington, somewhat explicit), [personal profile] black_hound pulls together clips from a number of 18th century military sources to create this vid about war and its effects on the people who fight in them. Some excellent battlefield footage here, though after watching it you'll probably feel a bit uncomfortable about using adjectives like "excellent". I know I do.

Because it's been too damn long.

Of course we all know him as Major Edrington:

"You had better call me My Lord. I am, in fact, the Earl of Edrington."

7 more -- out of uniform -- below the cut )

In passing, I must just share the Edrington drinking game. It's simple, and there's only one rule. While watching Hornblower "The Frogs and the Lobsters" aka "The Wrong War", you take a drink any time Edrington says something that, like a fortune cookie, is funnier when suffixed with "... in bed."
